The heart of prosperity

J. K. Rowling said to Oprah that even though now a billionaire, she worries about money and does not feel financially secure. She believes it was because of her days as a single mom with no work and barely enough to feed herself and her child.

I was reminded of a woman local to my hometown. I would see her in the early morning after working nights picking up bottles and cans that others had littered. She never varied in her routine. Everyone in the area knew her and let her be.
As it happened, she was a millionaire, but she never felt prosperous, and felt compelled to shore up her security by collecting bottles and cans for a few pennies each.

On the other side of that story were people like my aunt, who had little in terms of money, but did have a generous heart. My aunt always represented prosperity to me, and I felt good being around her.

When I looked up the definition of prosperity, it included being successful, and having lots of money. I don’t think so. Thinking of my aunt and her generous heart, and remembering the feeling I had inside me whenever I was around her – to me, prosperity is a state of heart-felt generosity and openness.

What is it to you?

Quote of the Week

When you are able to shift your inner awareness to how you can serve others, and when you make this the central focus of your life, you will then be in a position to know true miracles in your progress toward prosperity.
― Wayne Dyer
