Reflect, Learn, Intend: A Year-End Journey

This is my final blog for 2023, and I wanted it to reflect on the past year to see how it went for me in my world, and set to intentions for the new year, based on what I want to improve and accomplish moving forward. I do this every year-end.

If I were to invite you to do this with me, I’d begin by asking you to recall the events and things that stand out for you in a positive and uplifting way. It might be based on the intentions you set for yourself at the beginning of the year. It might include wonderful unexpected gains.

Then I’d invite you to remember things that might cause you pain, and how you responded or reacted to them. What you learned from them – as a human being, if we don‘t encounter challenges, then I’d wonder if we were really living. What did you lose? What did you fail at? How did you meet that failure? How did it help you grow?

Finally, I’d invite you to consider what you intend for next year, for yourself, your family, and your community. Very few of us live in isolation – nobody I know! Even if we don’t see it, our family and community contribute significantly to our wellbeing. How do we contribute, in turn, to theirs?

Your intentions may be lofty or simple, depending on the kind of person you are. One piece of advice I often got, and one I’ll pass onto you is, no matter how complex, pick the most important part of it and focus on that first; then once that’s done, pick the next important thing. This way, you might make it through your intentions, and have room for some wonderful unexpected surprises.
